Year 6 - Woodpecker Class

Welcome to Woodpecker class!

Class teacher: Mrs Pursey.

Teaching assistants: Miss Nielson and Miss Yates.

We are very excited to return to school and welcome you into year 6. We have a busy, fun-filled year ahead of us. Those registered for the Kent Test will be completing this on Thursday, 12th September. Applications for secondary schools must be made between 1st September and 30th October. Look out for information about local secondary school open events.

We start the year with our history enquiry:

What was the impact of WWII on the people of Britain?

We will look at the cause of Britain going to war with Germany and the impact the war had on the people of Britain. This will enable us to understand the impact of war on local communities and daily lives. We will learn that members of society standing up for their rights can be the cause of change and will understand that migrants came from different parts of the world to aid Britain in their war efforts.

Our reading text Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll is a fictional book about siblings evacuated to the Devonshire coast from London during WWII, who have a mystery to solve involving a secret code.

To fully immerse and support us with our history enquiry, we will use the text Rose Blanche by Ian McEwan, in our English lessons. We will use the story and images in the text, combined with the writing skills taught throughout our primary learning, to write a variety of pieces.

Forest school

We will be attending a three-week block. Our forest school afternoons are Monday 30th September, Monday 7th October and Monday 14th October. Your child will need to come into school wearing their school uniform with a suitable change of clothes in a bag that you are happy to get dirty and wet. As the colder, wetter weather approaches, warmer clothing, coats and waterproofs will make the experience more comfortable.

We want to be able to enjoy the activities during lunch break on the field. For these activities we request wellies to be kept in school to utilise the outdoor learning spaces every day.

P.E

This term we will be doing P.E on a Wednesday afternoon. We are lucky to be supported by Team Theme during these lessons and will be learning Tag Rugby. Please send in P.E kit and trainers to change into for the lesson. For health and safety purposes, earrings should be removed and long hair up.

Reminders will be sent about Forest School and P.E on Class Dojo, as well as information shared about the learning. Any queries or questions please message me using Class Dojo.
