Welcome to Term 4
Term 4 – Year 5 Overview
Welcome to an exciting and enriching Term 4 in Year 5! This term, we will be exploring fascinating themes across English, Science, History, Design & Technology, and RE.
English
In English, we will be reading Mark of the Cyclops by Saviour Pirotta. This thrilling story, inspired by Greek mythology, will immerse us in adventure and ancient legends.
Through this text, pupils will:
- Explore narrative structure and character development
- Write their own myth-inspired stories
- Study and perform poetry linked to mythological themes
- Develop descriptive and figurative language
- Improve editing and drafting skills
We will focus particularly on how authors build tension, create atmosphere, and weave themes into their writing.
Science – Life Cycles
In Science, we will investigate the life cycles of a variety of living things, including:
- Plants
- Mammals
- Birds
- Amphibians
- Insects
Children will compare similarities and differences between life cycles, explore processes such as metamorphosis, and understand how living things grow, reproduce and change over time.
History – Ancient Greece
Our History learning will take us back to Ancient Greece. We will explore:
- The legacy of Greek civilisation
- The origins of democracy and how it influenced modern government
- Daily life in Ancient Greece
- Greek gods and goddesses and their cultural significance
Children will learn how Ancient Greece has shaped the modern world, from politics and philosophy to art and storytelling.
Design & Technology – Cooking and Nutrition
In D&T, we will focus on cooking and nutrition. Pupils will:
- Learn about balanced diets
- Understand where food comes from
- Develop food preparation skills
- Design and create their own recipes
We will encourage creativity, healthy choices, and safe kitchen practices.
Religious Education (RE)
In RE, we will explore the big question: What happens when we die?
Children will learn about different religious and non-religious beliefs about life after death, reflecting thoughtfully and respectfully on a range of perspectives.
Maths and Reading
We will continue to combine both Otter and Pine Martin classes to enhance learning and understanding in both core subjects whilst following the National Curriculum.
Otter class will continue with PE on Mondays after lunch and will be outside learning skills and playing Hockey.
We are looking forward to a busy and inspiring term full of creativity, discovery, and thoughtful discussion!
