Year 3 - Dragonfly Class

Welcome to Dragonfly Class

Class Teacher: Mrs Cole

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Sobhani

Welcome to Term 3

Writing

We will be creating a fact file from our investigation into earthquakes including how they occur, damage caused and how scientists measure and warn about them.

Followed by a recount of a volcanic eruption from the viewpoint of a survivor. With this, we will be creating some diary entries and creating our own version of the story using a narrative text.

Reading – The Iron Man by Ted Hughes

We will be reading The Iron Man, a Sci-Fi fable about an Iron giant who appears from seemingly nowhere, feeding on local farm equipment. A trap is set, and he is buried, although he eventually escapes. A small boy called Hogarth has the idea of sending him to a scrapyard to feed him metal and keep him out of the way. Meanwhile, a giant dragon appears to get larger in space and makes its way to earth. The Iron Man is suddenly called upon to help save the world. The Iron Man came to the top of the cliff. Where had he come from? Nobody knows. How was he made? Nobody knows.

The children will continue to develop their inference skills throughout the term.  They will begin with simple inferences about the emotions of the characters, moving on to more complex inferences about the motives and goals of the characters.

Maths – Multiplication and Division, Length and Perimeter

We will continue learning multiplication and division. We will start to multiply and divide a two-digit number by a one-digit number. We will then be moving onto length and perimeter. Measuring in metres, centimetres and millimetres and what is a perimeter.

It is important that the children practice their timetables, in particular their 2's, 5's and 10's and move on to learn the 3 and 4 times tables.

Enquiry Question – Geography: Why do people live near volcanoes?

We will be learning about how our earth is constructed and changes over time as a result of earthquakes and volcanoes and tsunamis. Whilst also exploring how the movement of tectonic plates causes them. We will identify the most significant mountain ranges on a world map and the location of the Ring of Fire. We will be able to recognise the positive and negatives of living near a volcano.

PE

Our PE lessons will be on a Wednesday mornings. This term, we will be learning netball outside. Please send the children into school wearing their PE kits. Please ensure the PE kits are suitable for outdoor PE - A pair of trainers should be brought to school to change for PE. School shoes are still needed for the classroom.
