Welcome to Dormouse Class

Class Teacher: Miss Hilton

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Ninglekhu and Miss Humphrey Smith

Term 6

Our final term!

Welcome back to the last term of Year 2.

Our history enquiry focus is ‘What is a Monarch?’ You will be able to understand what a monarch is and who our monarchy is, as well as stepping back in time to find out about William the Conqueror and how he became the King of England. There will be lots of investigating different types of castles too.

Our trip this term will be to Margate Turner Contemporary and the beach. We will travel by coach and have lunch there. More details will be given soon.

Our English sessions will be linked to the following books:

The Cook and the King by Julia Donaldson

The Queen's Hat by Steve Antony

If I Were King by Chelsea O'Byrne

Writing will continue to focus on punctuation, description and extending with conjunctions. To support our writing, we will begin the term with a ‘Royal Tea Party!’ The children can bring their best party outfit to wear! Please see DOJO for updates. We will also link some writing to our history, William the Conqueror.

DT is all about sewing! Sew a running stitch, preparing and cutting fabric and adding decorations.

Our science focus is to extend our knowledge from last term’s focus on plants and growing. An exciting project which will teach us how to reduce, reuse and recycle by learning how paper is made and making our own plant pots from eco-friendly materials.

Our maths learning continues with fractions, leading to telling the time to the nearest five minutes, collecting data and presenting it, as well as continuing to practising addition and subtraction. Please continue to help by practising your 2,5, and 10 times tables at home whenever you can.

It is always helpful to us for you to support your child’s learning at home with tasks such as times tables, money and measurement.

PE will be outside, weather permitting, on THURSDAY afternoon, so please have an appropriate PE kit and trainers. These can be worn to school and kept on throughout the day.

We don’t have any Forest School dates yet. However, I will update you via Class Dojo.

Home learning will include reading each day and phonics/reading/spelling/ maths games on

Twinkl For Web alongside practise TT Rockstars.

If you have any questions please contact me via DOJO.

Thank you for your continued support.

Term 5

Welcome back!

Our English sessions will be linked to the following books:

The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch by Ronda Armitage

The Secret of Black Rock by Joe Todd-Stanton

Tiddler by Julia Donaldson

Writing will continue to focus on punctuation, description and extending with conjunctions. We will be using the first person, writing a newspaper report and writing adventure stories.

Phonics

In our phonics learning we will continue to learn the Level 6 sounds to support us with our reading and spelling. If you would like to support your child with this at home, you might find the following video clip helpful:

Our Maths learning begins with mass, volume and capacity, leading on to fractions. Please continue to help by practising your 2,5, and 10 times tables at home whenever you can.

Our Geography enquiry focus is ‘What is it like to live by the coast?’ By the end of the term, you will be able to name and locate the seas and oceans surrounding the UK using an atlas, define what the coast is, locate coasts in the UK as well as describe how people use the coast, in particular Margate.

Art is all about mixing primary colours to create secondary colours and developing our collage skills by gathering different textures from inside and outside and using them in our own creative artwork.

Our Science focus is Plant Growth and investigating seeds, bulbs and plants and recognising the conditions required for germination and healthy plant growth.

PE will be outside, weather permitting, on THURSDAY afternoon, so please have an appropriate PE kit and trainers. These can be worn to school and kept on throughout the day.
