Maths

Our Maths Curriculum
We teach maths using a mastery approach, working closely with the Kent and Medway Maths Hub and the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). This means:
- The whole class works on the same topic together, at the same pace, so that no child is left behind or held back.
- Any child who needs extra support gets it quickly, through short pre-teaching sessions or flexible small-group help.
- Learning is broken down into small, carefully ordered steps, each one building on what has come before.
- Children are taught precise mathematical language and use visual models that help them see how maths works, not just how to get an answer.
- Equal importance is placed on children knowing their number facts quickly (fluency) and truly understanding the maths behind them (conceptual understanding).
How we teach Maths
We use a “Concrete - Pictorial - Abstract” (CPA) approach:
-
Concrete: Hands-on learning with objects and manipulatives.
-
Pictorial: Using images, diagrams, and bar models to represent problems.
-
Abstract: Recording and working with numbers and symbols.
This ensures children gain both confidence and understanding at each stage.
Progression Across School
Here’s how key maths skills build through White Rose Maths:
-
EYFS: Early number, counting, shapes, and patterns.
-
KS1 (Years 1-2): Place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, measurement.
-
LKS2 (Years 3-4): Larger numbers, times tables, fractions/decimals, area/perimeter.
-
UKS2 (Years 5-6): Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and algebra.
Mastering Number
We deliver Mastering Number; a research-based teaching tool developed by the NCETM to build strong number sense, quick recall and confident mental maths.
