Year 6 - Magpie Class
Welcome to Year 6 Magpie Class
Class Teacher: Mr Chappell
Teaching Assistants: Mrs Dwyer and Mr Dole

Welcome back to Term 6
WOW! The final term of year 6 has now arrived.
As I begin to put together final reports and assessments, I find myself reflecting on the journey we have shared over the past year. I cannot help but feel incredibly proud of all the children in Magpie Class and everything they have achieved.
WELL DONE EVERYONE!
This is a long term, with promises of fun activities, special visits and big moves as we prepare ourselves for secondary school. We want the children to be as prepared as possible and will spend time working on many of these transitions over the next 8 weeks.
Special Events for your Diaries
Monday 1st June - Space Dome Experience
Monday 8th June - Art Workshop
Friday 19th June - St Lawence Cricket Ground to watch Kent compete against Middlesex
Awards ceremony and Party (Date TBC)

To start the term, we will be launching the children into space with a special visit from Science Dome with guest speaker Giuseppe Nicolosi (a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society), who will be taking our children on a special space launch through the stars to visit the moon, known galaxies and planets. We will be using this to support our writing, including a recount of our space experience and persuasive letter writing. We will later write a biography about a famous astronaut from the first successful moon landing and finally end the term on producing a set of instructions to build our own water-powered space rockets.

We will continue to read our class book, Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll to build our fluency and understanding, as well as complete a variety of activities around the text. This will also support our history topic on World War Two.
We will also be completing comprehension tasks around different texts to support us with the skills of inference, retrieval, scanning texts and vocabulary development.

We will work in our classes for our final term of maths learning, starting with geometry – shape and position and direction. We will then move onto area and perimeter and later algebra, where we will be applying our number knowledge to new concepts.

This term, we will complete our enquiry of Evolution and Inheritance. Where we will be exploring variation and inheritance in different living things and how observations and fossil evidence have led to the theory of evolution, before moving onto Making Connections: Are some sunglasses better than others? Testing light and UV transmission of different sunglasses through an enquiry to decide which pair works best.

This term we will look at the history enquiry: What was the impact of World War II on the people of Britain? During this enquiry we will
- Identify the causes of World War 2.
- Identify the different phases in the Battle of Britain.
- Make deductions about the Blitz from photographs.
- Describe how children may have felt when evacuated.
- Evaluate the accuracy, reliability and usefulness of sources.
- Describe the impact WW2 had on women’s and African-Caribbean migrant lives.

We will be completing a geography-DT project, where we will be investigating the local birds and designing a bird box to encourage them to return to the new school site.

This term we will explore mixed media and look at the work of artists. We will be looking at artwork inspired by space and planets and will seek to create our own, using a range of materials.
Forest School and PE Days

This term, Magpies will not have forest school.
PE is an important part of our weekly routine, and we ask that children come to school prepared and ready for their sports lessons each week. On PE days, the children must attend wearing their PE kits.
Our PE day this term is Tuesday (Outdoors).
This term, we will be outside, learning the skills for athletics, with additional opportunities to develop our skills in rounders.
Reminders for PE days:
-
Earrings must be removed/covered for health and safety.
-
Long hair should be tied back.
-
Children may bring deodorant or body spray for personal hygiene (roll-on only).
Home Learning and Reading
All children have access to their TTRockstars accounts to practise timetables regularly. We’ve also introduced a new platform called Twinkl Learner, which can be accessed both at school and at home. It’s packed with learning games, challenges, and opportunities to practise weekly spellings and maths skills in a fun and engaging way. A TTRockstars challenge has been set up to run every weekend where the Magpies can compete with the Woodpeckers for the title of TTRockstars Champions.
Please support us by encouraging your child to use these accounts at home to reinforce their learning. If you’re unsure of any login details or need help accessing the platform, just let me know and I’ll be happy to assist.
Every child will have a home reading record and is expected to read frequently throughout the week. Reading records should be in school every day, so adults can check progress and listen to children read during the week.
We’ve updated how we use Dojo points and Merits to celebrate positive behaviour and learning achievements.
Dojo Points
Each pupil will begin the term with 0 dojo points and aim to reach 30. Once they hit this target, they’ll earn a prize from the class prize box — then their points will reset, ready for the next challenge!
Merits and Golden Coins
Children can earn merits for:
-
Demonstrating school values
-
Exceptional work in class
-
Receiving the weekly Star Award
-
Other learning achievements
Once they collect 12 merits, they can trade them in for a gold coin to use in the school book vending machine — a brilliant way to reward reading and effort.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You’re welcome to speak with me or a member of the class team — we’re always happy to help. We’re available before and after school, or you can message me via Class Dojo to arrange a meeting.
We’re looking forward to continuing this amazing Year 6 journey with you and your child — full of growth, curiosity, and memorable moments.
