Welcome to Term 2

This is our last term in our old school, so we are excited to make lasting memories before he head into the New Build.

This term we will be learning lots of new interesting topics and completing our first Year 3 assessments too.

Enquiry Question – History: Would you prefer to have lived in the Stone Age, Bronze Age or Iron Age?

We will learn about prehistory and understand a timeline including AD and BC eras. We will explore the Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age, investigating how artefacts can give evidence into the life of humans living in these times. The changes between the eras will be identified to help us decide which period we would have preferred to live in.

Reading – The Stolen Spear by Saviour Pirotta

We will be reading The Stolen Spear, which is set around the Orkney Islands in Scotland. A young boy called Wolf sets off on an adventure to solve a mystery. He journeys from his village now known as Skara Brae to a wider, ancient world on the cusp of a new age.

Maths - Addition and Subtraction, multiplication and division

We will continue learing addition and subtraction into the hundreds up to 1,000. We will be using varying methods and strategies including the column method using Place Value techniques they learnt in Term 1. We will then be moving onto multiplication and division. Learning new strategies and methods to solve equations.

It is important that the children practice their timetables, in particular their 2's, 5's and 10's and moving on to learn the 3 and 4 times tables.

Writing

We will be using a couple of different texts this term to help inspire our writing. These books both have connections to the Stone Age and will help us to realise our history enquiry too. We will be looking at instructional writing, narrative and speech.

Forest School

Our Forest School day is now Thursday. This term the class will be split into two groups. The first group will go to Forest School for the first three weeks of term, the second group will go the next three weeks. Those children not attending forest school will be in class completing some targeted learning.

The groups will be notified during the first week of term.

On forest school days - Please send your child into school wearing their school uniform with a Forest School kit in a bag. Please ensure the Forest School clothes are appropriate for the weather that day.

Welcome to Term 1

Welcome to Year 3, Dragonfly class. I hope you all had an amazing summer holiday and are now ready to continue your learning journey in Lower Key Stage 2. We have lots of new and exciting learning and challenges this year and I am very excited to see how much progress you will make.

English

We are starting the term looking at the book The Hodgeheg. This will help the children to describe characters, settings and start to use some speech too. It is a lovely book, which will engage and motivate them to produce some wonderful pieces of writing.

We will be reading You're A Bad Man, Mr Gum! Why does he dislike children and animals and fun? Why is the Fairy angry and who is Jake the Dog? This will be a fun read which the children will help to read throughout the term.

Maths - Place Value, Addition and Subtraction

We will continue using Place Value techniques to help the children to grasp mathematical strategies in addition and subtraction. We will be working with numbers up to 100. It is important that the children practice their timetables, in particular their 2's, 5's and 10's. We will be moving on to learn the 3 and 4 times tables soon too.

Geography

In geography our enquiry is 'Are all settlements the same?'. We will learn how to locate major cities, physical and human features of different regions, including Canterbury, and investigate the difference between rural and urban areas. This will lead to describing who lives in different areas. We will start to use maps, atlases and digital maps to discover why we use a scale.

Home Reading - we encourage all children to read with an adult at home every day. This not only helps their fluency of reading, but also helps them to improve their writing too. Thank you in advance for your suppport with this.
